So many of the American Idol 2013 Top 20 this year have been down the Idol road before, and Nick Boddington is one of them, having been cut in Las Vegas last year.

Nick is a Memphis native but, according to his Facebook page, he has lived in New York City since 2005, where he has been a “background vocalist and session musician for emerging artists.”

In his americanidol.com interview from Season 11, Nick said that, until he auditioned for Idol, he hadn’t figured out who he was as an artist but has since found his musical niche. “I think I have the ability to make music that moves people,” he said in the interview.

This year, americanidol.com had each of the Top 20 get a video of themselves back home, so we saw Nick in the heart of Memphis, performing at a club with one of his favorite local bands. The 27-year-old bartender talked on camera about his strong family support system and his appreciation for Erica Cobb, his vocal coach. She really brought the shy singer out of his shell.

We also met Jade, Nick’s girlfriend, who is quite a character. She copped to “creeping on him for four years” before he became her boyfriend.

Nick ended the video by saying he hopes when people think of Memphis they will think of the musical greats like Al Green and, one day, Nick Boddington.

One thing's for sure -- he sure moved the American Idol 2013 judges with his moving rendition of “Stars” during Hollywood Week. As Keith Urban said, “Your range is beautiful.” Unfortunately, he took a bit of a step back during the Las Vegas round by singing James Morrison’s “Say Something”. The judges were not enthused. Nicki Minaj said it “wasn’t a 10,” while Randy Jackson was looking for more “moments” within the performance.

We’ll see how Nick does during the live shows -- perhaps he needs to get back to the piano.
