American Idol producer Nigel Lythgoe has spoken up to declare no feud exists between Season 12 judges Mariah Carey and Nicki Minaj.

The two were said to be at each other’s throats during the first day of auditions in New York City this week, with Mariah cutting Nicki off during feedback with the contestants and Nicki, in turn, talking over Mariah.

But according to Nigel, it’s all copacetic.

Speaking to TV Guide, he said, “Why would there be [a feud]?”

The producer continued, saying, "It's not about them. They know that. It's about the kids that come out there. It really has already become very constructive to the point of we'll say, 'Oh for Christ's sake, shut up. Let's move on.' If they're saying 'no,' they've got to tell them for half an hour why they're saying 'no' and how they can improve and come back.”

Nigel maintained that Nicki is actually respectful of Mariah, and any collision between the two femmes is purely constructive. He even quotes Nicki to have told auditioners, “’You do realize you’re auditioning in front of this incredible singer here. Why would you choose her song to sing?’”

Mariah herself laughed off the rumors earlier this week, telling reporters, “How are we gonna feud in two days? A feud takes a little longer to spread out [than that].”
