You might recall the controversial reaction Paul Jolley’s evoked in judge Nicki Minaj during American Idol 2013’s Hollywood Week. She was put off by the emotion he showed on stage, and asked him for one minute of professionalism. Ouch. He was nearly voted out in the Las Vegas round, but Jimmy Iovine saw potential in the Nashville-based country singer. In the tiebreaker, Jimmy voted to keep him on the show.

The American Idol 2013 judges have also agreed that Paul has the potential to be a marketable singler, but they’re not quite sure what kind of artist he wants to be. In fact, Jimmy even said last week he seems more “pop” than country. Paul has a lot to prove this week with his song choice, which will be particularly difficult with the theme being the “Music of Paul McCartney and John Lennon”.

The biggest thing Paul has going for him is his online following. He has plenty of fans, but if he doesn’t kick his performances up a notch, even they won’t save him from going home. And the judges save? They’re surely keeping that to use on a girl, and there are two strong country gals left in the competition with Janelle Arthur and Kree Harrison.

So how did Paul Jolley do on the Season 12 Top 9 performance show? Will he make it through to the Top 8 after the elimination results on Thursday night? Watch Paul’s American Idol 2013 Top 9 performance video below and let us know what you think!
