At 26, Paul McDonald is one of the old men of the American Idol summer tour — at least compared to 16- and 17-year-old Lauren Alaina and Scotty McCreery. He’s also been in the music biz far longer than many of his fellow Season 10 alums, and maybe that’s why he’s so
In Paul’s recent interview with Idol Chatter, the rasper said he thinks some of his AI compatriots need to get a little perspective on their current tour. “I don’t know if they get it,” says Paul. “I keep sticking it in their heads like, ‘Guys this is a misbelief of what rock ’n’ roll is like. It’s not gonna be like this always.’ When a half-dozen of them are complaining I want to like shake ‘em.”
Since Paul has done a fair amount of travelling with his band, The Grand Magnolias, he knows the rock ‘n’ roll fantasy he’s living at the moment won’t last forever, and he will likely go back to playing smaller venues once he’s done with the huge arenas.
“I tell them to soak this all in cause you aren’t going to be cruising in six tour buses and a crew with catering,” Paul says. “Normally you are loading in your own gear and hopping back in the van and cruising to the next city … To me this is like a vacation and I’m getting to see the arena scene. I’m playing before thousands of people a night.”
While it’s nice of Old McDonald to give the young ‘uns some advice about what to expect on the other side of the Idol tour road, we say let the kids have their fun. Some of them may find themselves back to playing for 200 people soon enough.
