After Phillip Phillips took American Idol’s Season 11 crown, it became something of a joke that only “White Guys With Guitars” have won the competition lately. He’s the fifth person of such description to win the show, following in the footsteps of David Cook, Kris Allen, Lee DeWyze, and Scotty McCreery.

But Phillip thinks that generalization is an oversight and that there’s a difference between himself and previous “WGWG” winners.

Speaking to the Los Angeles Times, Phillip explained, “If [people who say that] paid attention to each person's artistry, then they would know the difference between a lot of us… Kris is different from David, David is different from Scotty, and I'm different from all of them. I feel like I play the guitar and approach music a lot different than they do."

He hopes to drive that message home with his debut album, which is set for a November or December release date.
