American Idol Season 11 champ Phillip Phillips has already proven he’s the most successful Idol winner to emerge in years. Now, he has even more reason to celebrate: His coronation song, “Home,” is officially the best selling American Idol single in history!

Yahoo Music crunched some numbers recently, which revealed Phillip’s hit song has sold 4,262,000 digital copies compared to the previous title holder, Kelly Clarkson’s “Stronger (What Doesn’t Kill You),” which has sold a respectable 4,245,000 copies.

It wasn’t by sheer luck (or American Idol’s fanbase alone) that Phillip Phillips reached this milestone. When the song was released, it debuted at #10 on the Billboard Hot 100 and began a slow decline soon after. But when NBC picked up “Home” for use during the women’s gymnastics coverage of the Summer Olympics in August 2012, the song found new life and peaked at #6 on the singles chart.

This achievement is pretty impressive considering the ratings for Idol have continually declined over the last few seasons, and the finale for Phillip’s winning season raked in the fewest number of viewers of any Idol finale.

The album “Home” is found on, The World From the Side of the Moon, has reached a milestone of its own as well. It’s the first album from an American Idol alum since Carrie Underwood’s Some Hearts that’s remained in the Top 10 of the Billboard 200 for seven or more weeks.

We only hope Phillip’s followup will have as much success as his debut! What do you think of “Home” and The World From the Side of the Moon?
