Following last night’s American Idol, we caught up with judge Steven Tyler (minus the sloth) to get his reactions on the big finale. The legendary rocker talked about how he thinks runner-up Jessica Sanchez will do in the music industry, and why he thinks winner Phillip Phillips just might have a future in the movies.
What was your reaction to Phillip winning?
Steven Tyler: He's real. We watched him go from a guy that was pulling himself out of his soul to a guy who can sing a melody line without feeling uncomfortable. He's just really evolved and he's been vulnerable.
What do you see happening to Jessica now?
The last two get record deals and she sings so beautiful, she’ll be on her way. She’ll have a great career.
Was it the last song that did her in?
Oh, I don't really want to put my finger on that. It wasn't her best song; it didn't show her voice off. You've got to realize the rules of the show are every time you've got to bring it. And whatever it was they loved the last time, you've got to move them that way. However, the guy that won didn't care! He just don't care and that's beautiful. I said from the first, I thought he'd win, only because he's so vulnerable. I think he's going to be a movie star. I don't know why but I just think that but I look at his face and I see James Dean.
Did you see SNL with Mick Jagger impersonating you?
Ohhh they got it so wrong. He could have done the, “Yeah Yeah Yeah!” He could have done the bastard son of Mick Jagger, there have been so many skits... but I thought he looked good with long hair, I’ve always wanted him to grow it back. It was good, it was fun.
Would you be upset if Jennifer Lopez left?
Yeah probably. Everything evolves. We get to sit next to her and that makes everything worthwhile.
