If you're anything like us, you're still breathless from last night's epic American Idol finale. And it looks like the big night left Phillip Phillips gasping for air, too.
The guitar-strumming champ offered up his unedited reaction right after the show, sharing his thoughts on the emotional night and giving us the inside scoop on how he overcame the pain of his health problems to take the title of "American Idol."
How do you feel?
Phillip: I don't know. I don't really feel anything… It’s amazing; this whole situation is so unbelievable!
Did you think you were going to win?
It’s so unreal man, it hasn't sunk in yet! It's such a blessing and I am trying to comprehend it all…
Tell us about your surgery?
I'm going to get some surgery done so I’m going to get all better for the tour.
How were you able to overcome the pain?
Yeah, it was very tough, but I had great doctors and great people surrounding me so that really helped out. It’s just a blessing to be here now.
What was your favorite performance tonight and of the season?
Definitely with John Fogerty. We had a blast. He is such a nice guy! Being up on that stage with him and all those people, it’s just crazy!
Can you talk about what happened on stage when you were performing “Home” tonight?
I wasn't thinking about anything — not even the song. I didn't really want to sing or anything… I just started thinking about the journey and how far all of us have come and how far we made it. It’s so overwhelming.
Why do you think you’re the winner and not Jessica?
I have no idea. I don’t have a clue. Jessica has huge career ahead of her, and we’re very supportive of each other.
Did you think you’d be standing here when you first auditioned?
Honestly, I didn't think I would make it to see the judges. I have no shame in saying I’m not a great singer. I just love having fun on stage jamming with the guys and just playing good music man, get the crowd into it. Music is fun. It takes away a lot of things that are going around.
Has Heejun Han given you crap yet?
Heejun always gives me crap. He gives me lots of craps. [Laughs] He’s very supportive. He prayed for me and Jessica right before we did our duet. He's a good guy!
What does it mean to have your family and girlfriend here tonight?
It means a lot to be supported by your family and people that love you. It’s just a blessing to have good family like that, and my sisters and brother-in-law. My nieces, girlfriend, my mom and dad — everybody…
Will your brother-in-law, Ben Neil, be on your album?
He is coming with me everywhere I go!
Are you all cried out?
I might end up crying some more. I hate crying, but I’ll probably end up crying some more. It feels good at times.
What are your thoughts on your car?
I haven't seen it, and I didn’t even know I was going to give my brother- in-law one. I was like, “Dang I would have kept that one, too!” [Laughts]
I am so blessed to have all this happen and I can't wait to see what next season comes!
