Since Phillip Phillips, 21, took the title of American Idol on the show’s 11th season, speculation about his ailing health has dominated most conversations. After his surgery to remove kidney stones just a week ago, Phillip made his first post-op appearance at the American Idol Live! Tour press junket, telling the media he’s feeling better. “I'm good. I'm not 100 [percent], but I'm good,” he said at the conference. “I'm doing a lot better than expected, so that's a good thing.”

Wetpaint Entertainment was there to hear Phillip address his recovery as he embarks on the 45-city tour that starts off in Detroit, Michigan on July 6.

A couple of months ago you told us you were taking just a guitar and a bed on tour, but aren’t you done with bed after having to spend so much time in it recently?

Phillip Phillips: I will probably never be done with the bed, but yeah, those things haven't really changed. I still like to sleep but I've been going crazy looking at the four walls around me.

You've mentioned bed rest, how confident are you that you're going to be 100% for the tour?

I'm pretty confident. I just want to have fun with it. I've been recovering but I've also been practicing, when I can, and it's going to go well, I believe.

How are you holding up with the rigorous rehearsal schedule?

Well, I haven't really been able to rehearse as much as everyone else because I've been recovering and whatnot, so I've been practicing when I can.

Have fans been supportive of you during your health issues?

Yeah, a lot of people have been praying for me.

Now that the pressure of the show is over, is the tour the icing on the cake?

It's going to be fun. I'm going to treat it like I did the show — just make sure every night when I go out there that it's fun first, and then make sure the music's tight, and hopefully the crowd feels it.

What songs will you perform on the tour?

A little bit of everything. It's what I do! It's kind of like what was on the show — it's going to be a little bit of different types of music. It's going to be fun.

Can we look forward to a new single?

Not a new one, no, but I'm just now working on the album. I've been writing and I'm excited to get good stuff out. Who I'm working with is still going on. I think I've got some people but we're still going to see. I'm trying to get it out around November or December.

Any dream collaborators?

I wrote a song with David Ryan Harris that I like, but most of the ones I have written it has just been me as I haven't been able to work with a lot of writers, but I would like to write with Rob Thomas. He's one of my favorites.

What's been the biggest change for you since winning?

I don’t know, I’ve just been on the down since then and haven't been able to do anything so it hasn't really hit me yet. It'll probably hit me when the tour comes.

What's been your first big splurge since the show?

I don't know… I haven't really been able to do anything. I just been laying in bed so I haven't really done anything. I’ve just been resting and recovering.

Your dad mentioned that you have been playing at 50%, what is Philip at 100% like?

I have no idea. You'll have to let me know when you see it. (Laughs)
