Although we were hoping for news that season 11 American Idol winner Phillip Phillips would be headlining his own tour this summer, the recent announcement is just as good. P2 will be opening for John Mayer on his first tour in three years. The hiatus was due to a throat granuloma. After an unsuccessful surgery, John tells Billboard about his “harrowing journey in the past year to repair his vocal cords.”

It’s history-making, indeed, and we’re so glad P-Squared is along for the ride. Phillip only recently wrapped up his stint as the opening act for Matchbox Twenty, so 2013 is quite a year for the “Gone, Gone, Gone” singer. The tour kicks off on July 6 at Milwaukee’s SummerFest and runs through October, with a final performance at the Hollywood Bowl.
