All around him, Phillip Phillips must be hearing shouts of “Happy Birthday” — or “Maligayang Kaarawan” — as he and the American Idol Top 10 are currently on tour in the Philippines. Sadly, it sounds like Phillip is celebrating his 22nd birthday with a nasty stomach bug.
In honor of one of our favorite (and momentarily ailing) Idol winners, here are five reasons we love to love Phillip:
He’s a trooper
Throughout his time on the show, Phillip battled a chronic kidney problem that led to him getting surgery soon after winning the Idol title. He’s been doing better lately, even while embarking on a lengthy cross-country summer tour with the rest of the Season 11 Top 10, and every Phillip fan is thankful he’s managed to stick it through!
He loves his girlfriend
Hannah Blackwell, Phillip’s girlfriend of three years, has been by his side through thick and thin since the singer won Idol back in May. Accompanying him all throughout the American Idols Live! Tour, she’s even flown to the Philippines to be near her man. Phillip recently called his main squeeze “a sweetheart” in an interview with Access Hollywood, adding, “she watches over me.” What a cute couple!
He’s humble, even with a platinum record
Phillip’s coronation single, “Home,” took on a life of its own after he debuted the song during the Idol finale. It’s been used in the Olympics and in the trailer for Clint Eastwood’s latest film, Trouble With the Curve. With momentum like that, it’s not surprising the song became a platinum selling hit. When presented with his platinum record on the Today show, Phillip simply said, “I never thought any of this would ever happen, so it’s been a true blessing.”
He’s talented, duh
Whether he’s covering Stevie Wonder or performing original material, there’s no doubt that Phillip’s got the chops to back up his Idol win.
We can’t wait for his debut album
It looks like we’ll have to wait until early 2013 to hear Phillip’s debut album, but we’re certain he’ll knock it out of the park!
