American Idol’s Randy Jackson appeared on The View this morning, but rather than clarifying any of the lingering rumors over whether he’ll return for Season 12 as a judge or come back in a mentoring capacity, he only muddied the waters further.

When Barbara Walters asked Randy directly what role he’d take if and when he returns to the show, and he wasn’t exactly forthcoming.

“Well, listen, I don’t think everything’s really been worked out, what’s really going to happen with the show,” he said. “One of the greatest things happened for me recently, confirmed on the show was my girl Miss Mariah Carey … You know, Mariah’s the only one confirmed on the show, coming on as a judge like that, you know, as the new judges, but you know to me, it was great for her to do this.”

Barbara wasn’t content to just chat about MC, though, and pressed him again for an answer. “Let’s see what happens, it hasn’t all been worked out yet,” he answered, saying that circumstances would be clearer in a the coming weeks

One thing he did speak directly about was the fact that executive producer Nigel Lythgoe has gone on record to suggest that the show could rotate new judges one season at a time.

Randy said, “It would be like The View having different people each season… doesn’t quite work.”
