With today’s surprising news that Steven Tyler will part ways with American Idol and Jennifer Lopez hesitation to confirm her allegiance to the show, where does that leave longtime judge Randy Jackson?

In the exact same boat, apparently. US Weekly reports that Randy — the sole original judge from Idol’s early days — is contemplating a move from the judges table to a mentoring role.

A source close to the show said, “[Show producers] think they need to freshen everything up now.”

Names like Miley Cyrus, Katy Perry, and Adam Lambert have been tossed around as potential new judges, but the insider says there’s another more likely name at the top of the list: Mariah Carey, whose manager is none other than Randy himself.

“They are in serious talks with Mariah and it’s very close to being a done deal, “ the source said. “And they will move Randy into a more mentoring role.”

Whew, if the report is true, we’re glad Randy may at least stick around in a limited role! Losing what could amount to three Idol judges is traumatic, to say the least.
