American Idol judge Steven Tyler sat down with Matt Lauer for a Dateline interview on Sunday, and the Aerosmith rocker held nothing back in recalling his notoriously storied rock and roll career. Everyone knows about Steven’s extreme partying and drug use back in the day, but some of the specifics of those habits still resounded during the interview. Here’s a round-up of the most notable revelations:

- Steven and his Aerosmith bandmates would actually write into their touring contracts that they needed a little off-stage area to use drugs during concert performances. A budget allotment for drug use was also written into their contracts, using the code term, “24 Track Tape.” Steven commented on the time like this: “I hurt a lot of people. I still liked the ride, but it was a one way street.”

- In a particularly poignant moment, Steven recalled how his drug abuse had contributed to his absenteeism during the childhoods of daughters, Liv and Mia. Steven said, “…What drugs did, it took my children away, it took my life away, it took my band away, it took my marriages away… And I was on my knees.”

- Steven spoke about lingering bad feelings between him and his bandmates, not receiving calls from them after falling off a stage in 2009, high on prescription drugs. Said Steven, “I get that they were angry… I was the frontman, and I fell off. I was on drugs, and I owned it. But it really hurt me [that they didn’t call].”

There’s a lot more to this interview, including the bombshell that it was Kara DioGuardi who initially suggested to Steven that he pursue his current Idol judging gig. You’re gonna want to watch the videos below, trust us…
