There’s never a good time to be sent home from American Idol, but the pain has got to be a little sharper when you miss the honor of being in the Top 10 — and going on the Season 11 summer tour — by just one spot. Poor Shannon Magrane found herself in just that position when she was eliminated last night. “It’s definitely really upsetting because I really wanted to go on tour,” Shannon told reporters during a conference call on March 15. “I was so close to it.”
The bubbly blond was part of an all-female Bottom 3. Since it has been 5 years since a girl won the competition, Shannon spilled that the ladies were all fighting hard to earn the title. But with teenage girls getting so attached to the male contestants, she feels the guys have a “competitive edge.” She understands the crushes but wishes there was more of a “girl power” spirit when it came to voting.
After she received the lowest amount of votes, the judges decided not to prevent her elimination by using the sole save of the season. “I think that they thought that I wasn’t ready yet,” she explained. She doesn’t think that’s the case, but she agreed with their decision not to save her. “If they used it for me, then America wouldn’t have too much to look forward to with the save.”
With her run on the show over, the 16-year-old high school student doesn’t expect it to be easy to readjust to her life. “I don’t think that I’m going to be normal anymore because there’s lots of people out there who know who I am now,” explained Shannon. “They’re waiting to hear more of me, and I’m not going to stop until they do.”
In the meantime, she has to figure out what to do about her education: “The one thing I’m not looking forward to is school… I just want to sing all the time.” She hopes to eventually release an album and return to the spotlight. “I’ve grown so much and I can’t take anything but good memories from this whole thing. It was just such a great learning experience… and just a little taste of what’s going to happen in the future.”
We wish her the best of luck!
