When Phillip Phillips sang Dave Matthews Band’s “The Stone” on American Idol last week, viewers everywhere had the same thought: What took so long?!

People have compared Phillip to Dave since the start of the competition. So what does Dave himself have to say about the matter? Chatting with Vulture at a film premiere this week, the prolific frontman confessed that he’s never seen the Idol contestant perform before but doesn’t mind the comparison. “I don’t feel threatened,” said Dave. “Maybe I paved the way for him.”

And if Phillip isn’t solid on his post-Idol plans, Dave may have an enticing offer for him.

Said the famous singer (jokingly, we hope), “He should kick my a**, [then] maybe I can retire and he can take over my band.”

No need for physical violence, guys! We’re pretty sure there’s enough room in the music world for both of these fellas.
