Speaking with reporters on the red carpet before the 54th annual Grammy Awards, host LL Cool J solemnly remembered the late Whitney Houston, saying the focus of this year’s show is “how we can be respectful and show her the love and appreciation she deserves.” Whitney suddenly passed away Saturday evening, the night before the major musical awards show.
LL Cool J opened the awards gala with a prayer for Whitney. “We’ve had a death in our family,” LL began. As the music industry reflects on the past year and, on a larger scale, the epic contributions to the industry given by Whitney in her lifetime, LL says there’s one singer he thinks comes close to the legendary status of Ms. Houston: American Idol alum Jennifer Hudson.
LL says the American Idol alum is “the closest thing we have now to what Whitney was," LL said of Jennifer, who is scheduled to perform a tribute to Whitney during the ceremony.
