American Idol 2013 contestant Aubrey Cleland may have had a fan in Nicki Minaj — the judge told the singer, “I’m obsessed with you” — but it didn’t translate for America: She isn’t one of the Season 12 Top 10.

The last time we saw Aubrey perform, she was singing Fergie’s “Big Girls Don’t Cry.” Randy Jackson compared her to Rihanna, while Mariah Carey thought she had “multi-platinum potential.” So what went wrong?

It certainly couldn’t be her looks. The gorgeous Oregonian won Family Circle Magazine’s nationwide Mother-Daughter Model search, which drew over 2,300 entries. It seems good looks aren’t the only thing that runs in the family, though: Aubrey’s mother is also a performer.

Perhaps Aubrey getting eliminated has something to do with the fact that so few of her performances were actually showcased. We didn’t even see her audition! It can be tough to stand out in a crowd of 10 girls when viewers have only seen you sing two times. (In addition to the Fergie song, Aubrey sang “Sweet Dreams” in the Las Vegas round.)

But the 19-year-old Chapman University student has a lot to get back to — like her loving family and a supportive boyfriend.
