Taking what he learned from Hollywood Week, Cortez Shaw attempted to recoup the judges' favor with his version of Bruno Mars's "Locked Out of Heaven" during the Top 10 guys semi-finals round. While his vocals were stronger this time around, the judges didn't think it was the best song choice for him.

Apparently, voters felt the same way, because Cortez failed to make the cut for the Season 12 Top 10.

The Dallas native, who auditioned last year too, said this season was his “second chance at redemption.”

In his Road to Hollywood video, Cortez sat down with americanidol.com to discuss his idols (Michael Jackson, Justin Timberlake, Whitney Houston), his Idol inspirations (Kelly Clarkson and Ruben Studdard), and why he thought he had what it took to be the next American Idol. As he put it, “This is my dream. This is my passion.”

It’s interesting to take a look back at his audition last year, as Randy Jackson seemed to want to cut off his rendition of Adele’s “Someone Like You”. A bad case of Adele burnout, perhaps? But Jennifer Lopez let him finish, and he was ultimately sent to Hollywood.

Do you think Cortez was prematurely sent home, or was it his time to go?
