With American Idol 2013 trying to push the idea it’s the only U.S. talent reality show to put out hitmakers, season 11 winner Phillip Phillips opening last night’s big premiere was only appropriate.

P2 performed a stirring acoustic version of his massive hit song, “Home,” which you’ve likely heard on TV and in stores, malls, and restaurants all around the country (and possibly in your dreams it’s that ubiquitous).

With Phillip Phillips’ debut album, The World From the Side of the Moon, surpassing the 600,000 sales mark, it’s safe to say that this WGWG is here to stay. Despite a recent dip in sales for his single “Home,” the hit song made a strong comeback this week and moved more than 100,000 downloads.

Considering all this, USA Today proposed an intriguing question does “Home” have what it takes to beat out original American Idol winner Kelly Clarkson’s “Stronger (What Doesn’t Kill You)”? More radio play and promotion of “Home” on the new Idol season just could push it beyond “Stronger” in the next few months.

American Idol is now in its 12th season, and original winner Kelly is not only still relevant but a massive hit. While American Idol has its critics, there’s no denying many talented musicians have used it as a springboard to launch amazing careers.

Do you think “Home” has what it takes to bypass “Stronger”?
