Who is Candice Glover?
“Girl On Fire” was an appropriate song for American Idol 2013 hopeful Candice Glover to sing during Hollywood Week. Although she was cut from seasons 9 and 11, the St. Helena Island, South Carolina native has had a string of stellar performances during Season 13.
American Idol almost lost her though after she failed to make it to the Top 10 the first two tries. After getting cut from Las Vegas last year, she returned home to her job booking excursions on Fripp Island feeling very discouraged. She went back to singing at Luther’s and other bars around the Beaufort area, as well as weddings and funerals. She admits to feeling like her career was going nowhere.
Luckily for us and the American Idol 2013 judges, she had a nagging feeling that she was supposed to be here.
Candice returned this year and sang a rendition of “Syrup and Honey” at her initial audition that left the judges nearly speechless. The 23-year-old told her local paper, The Island Packet, that this was the moment that confirmed she’d made the right decision. "It was redemption," Candice said. "It was confirmation that this is actually where I'm supposed to be."
Having nabbed a highly coveted spot in the Top 2, this talented singer has already shown her vocals are the best of the best.
Candice Glover's American Idol 2013 Journey
Audition: Candice Glover auditioned for American Idol 2013 Season 12 in Charlotte, NC. She performed “Syrup and Honey” by Duffy and earned a golden ticket to Hollywood after Randy Jackson called it the best performance so far.
Hollywood Week A Capella Round: During the ladies' Hollywood Week a capella round, Candice performed “Impossible” by Christina Aguilera. The judges once again loved the song and gave her a pass to the group round.
Hollywood Week Group Round: During the ladies' Hollywood Week, Candice performed “Hit ‘Em Up Style” by Blu Cantrell in ‘The Swagettes’ group with Melinda Ademi, Kamarioa Ousley, and Denise Jackson. All four ladies were passed on to the solo round.
Hollywood Week Solo Round: During the ladies' Hollywood Week solo round, Candice Glover performed “Girl on Fire” by Alicia Keys. The judges were wowed by the performance and she was selected to go to Vegas as part of the Top 40.
Top 40/Las Vegas Round 3: Candice performed “You Make Me Feel Like a Natural Woman” by Aretha Franklin during the Las Vegas sudden death rounds. Keith Urban thought it was the perfect song choice and Mariah Carey said she is a real singer. She is selected to be part of the Top 20.
Top 20/Semi-Finals Round 1: Saved for the very end of the girls semi-finals round, Candice wowed the judges with her version of John Legend's "Ordinary People". Words literally failed Nicki Minaj, who simply saluted Candice, and Randy Jackson said he considered her to have the best voice in the competition.
Semi-Final Results: Candice Glover was selected as one of the Season 12 Top 10. She performed “I’m Going Down” by Rose Royce as her victory song.
Top 10 Week: Candice blew the judges away again with her version of Tom Jones's "I Who Have Nothing" during the Top 10 Performance and received a standing ovation for her performance.
Top 9 Week:
Candice Glover had never really showed us she could rock...until now. For the Top 9 American Idol performance show, the South Carolina took on the Beatles’ “Come Together” and absolutely slayed it. Randy Jackson put it perfectly when he said, “The voice is crazy.”
The backlash for how little the Top 9 knew about the legendary music of the Beatles was well earned, and the group performance of “Got To Get You Into My Life” on the Top 9 American Idol results show proved that only a select few of these American Idol hopefuls actually had a handle on this iconic music.
Top 8 Week:
For Candice Glover’s Top 8 American Idol performance for Motown week (oh, excuse us, “Music of the Motor City”), she chose Marvin Gaye’s “I Heard It Through the Grapevine”. While we cringed with dread because of the “been there, done that” feel to the song, the judges love it. In fact, Keith Urban called it her best performance yet.
As with many of the group performances, the Top 8 American Idol results show group number, Bob Seger’s “Old Time Rock and Roll” made us wish our volume was down on the TV. Sorry, but that was painful! Candice Glover was one of the only bright spots, however, as that girl can just plain sing.
Top 7 Week:
Candice Glover took on a huge icon for her Top 7 American Idol performance with The Rolling Stones’ “(I Can’t Get No) Satisfaction,” and she may have received her first tiny bit of criticism. While Nicki Minaj said her voice was “amazing,” she said she fell asleep because of the song choice. Ooh! Luckily, the other judges loved it, and Keith Urban called her “effortless.”
In the “oh no they didn’t” category, the American Idol finalists took on Queen’s “Somebody To Love” for their Top 7 American Idol results show group performance and, thankfully, it wasn’t all that horrendous. Of course, Candice manages to elevate any performance with her powerhouse vocals.
Top 6 Week:
For Candice Glover, week six of American Idol could have been when this powerhouse vocalist sealed the deal. For her top six performances, she chose Adele’s “Lovesong” and the classic song “Don’t Make Me Over”. She proved she can do old school or new school with equal finesse, and Randy Jackson even called her rendition of “Lovesong” “one of the greatest performances in twelve years of history of American Idol.” Standing ovations abounded!
We definitely considered turning down the volume for the American Idol Top 6 results show performance of “That’s What Friends Are For”. It was about as bad as we expected but there is an amazing moment mid-song when Candice belted out a note in perfect fashion (as usual).
Top 5 Week:
Candice Glover continued on her near perfect song choice streak this week. Her Top 5 American Idol performances were Mariah Carey and Whitney Houston’s “When You Believe” and Paula Abdul’s “Straight Up” – a week dedicated to American Idol judges! She not only wowed the panel with an absolutely amazing Mariah performance, but she gave “Straight Up” a cool, new sound. As Mariah said, “Smart, as always, song choice, genius!”
Divas in the making alert! The Top 5 girls are some of the most talented American Idol has ever seen, and their Top 5 American Idol result show Donna Medley diva medley proved these girls are going to go straight to the top. With her powerhouse vocals, Candice could easily lead the charge.
Top 4 Week:
At this point in the competition, each of these girls needs to bring it, and that’s exactly what Candice Glover did with her Top 4 American Idol 2013 performances. She not only performed “You’ve Changed” by Billie Holiday with grace, but she made American Idol history by singing Bruno Mars’ “When I Was Your Man”. It was the first time a hopeful had sung something for which the pronouns were wrong but, as the judges pointed out, it didn’t matter – Candice can pretty much do anything she wants at this point!
Every other year, we die a little inside when we hear the words “group performance,” but not so this year. On Top 4 American Idol 2013 results night, Candice Glover, Amber Holcomb, Angie Miller, and Kree Harrison performed “Crazy In Love” from The Great Gatsby. We actually enjoy the addition of the dancers this year, and these girls are amazing together. Girl band, perhaps? We hope Candice is the lead singer.
Top 3 Week:
Candice Glover continued to raise the bar with her Top 3 American Idol 2013 performances. Jimmy Iovine chose U2/Mary J. Blige’s “One” for the first round, and Nicki Minaj said she felt like she was at Candice’s show. Candice’s second performance, Emile Sande’s “Next To Me,” came after the judges saw her hometown visit. They were moved by her stellar rendition and the touching family reunion. But it was Candice’s final performance of “Somewhere” that could easily be in the Top Five performances (if not the Top Three!) on American Idol. Randy told her “she had one of the best vocals in American Idol history.”
Candice Top 3 results: Candice Glover was joined by Kree Harrison and Angie Miller for the Top Three American Idol results night group number. While you’d think the result of these three powerhouses getting together would be magical, there was only so much they could do with the lameness of the Selena Gomez song “Who Says.” Who says they should do that again? No one!
American Idol Finale Week:
Candice Glover’s American Idol 2013 finale performances were pretty much what you’d expect – amazing. While Randy Jackson didn’t like Simon Fuller’s song choice (neither did we!) of Adele’s “Chasing Pavements,” Candice’s vocals were perfect as usual. Her original song, “I Am Beautiful,” elicited a standing ovation by the judges and a few tears from Nicki Minaj. But her final performance of the night – her reprisal of “I Who Have Nothing” – will go down in American Idol history as an unforgettable moment in time. As Keith Urban said, it was like a “planet exploding.”
After a nationwide vote, Candice Glover was announced as the American Idol winner for Season 12 over Kree Harrison.
