Before American Idol:
Before he became a rock god — and long before he signed on to judge American Idol — Steven Tyler was just like any other boy growing up in Yonkers, New York. The son of Catholic school teacher, he worked in a bakery as a teen and was kicked out of high school for drug use. Okay, so maybe his childhood wasn’t exactly drama-free, but neither is the rest of his extraordinary life.

Steven and his musician pals Joe Perry and Tom Hamilton formed Aerosmith around 1970, and they moved to Boston, Massachusetts, soon after to try to hit it big. Dream on? As if! There, they fine-tuned the band and recorded their eponymous debut album, which was released in 1973. Thirteen more albums followed over the next three decades, selling more than 100 million total copies. Even though Steven's career has been tarnished by drug use and several stints in rehab (in the 1980s for heroin addiction and again in 2009 for overuse of painkillers), his unique style, unmistakable vocals, and rare lips have cemented his reputation as a rock god.

In addition to perfecting the whole rock star thing, Steven penned the autobiography Does The Noise in My Head Bother You?, which is scheduled for release in 2011.
