Name: Charlie Askew
Bio: When the “adorkable” Charlie Askew took to the audition stage in Baton Rouge, LA, the American Idol 2013 judges didn’t know what to expect. But the 17-year-old Little Rock, Arkansas, wowed them with his strange yet stellar performance of “Nature Boy”.
Charlie describes himself as being “socially awkward,” and said he’s found an outlet to express himself through music.
The unpredictable singer, who says, “I glorify weirdness,” revealed in his Road to Hollywood interview that Robert Plant was the artist who inspired him. He watched the musical legend perform and said to himself, “That’s what I want to do.”
As for what makes him stand out among the other hopefuls, Charlie said, “I have perfect pitch.” We’ll see if the Dawg agrees. He also plays several instruments.
The judges don’t seem to know what to make of this unusual young man, but one thing’s for sure -- he has found a major fan in Nicki Minaj. After his performance of “Rocket Man” in Las Vegas, she said, “Your awkwardness excites me. It’s fresh, it’s crazy!” Randy Jackson said the performance was a little “stage school” for him, but he said he liked Charlie.
Charlie also has a superfan in a hopeful who was eliminated in Las Vegas, and that’s the androgynous performer J’DA.
"Aw, I love him so much," J'DA told USA Today. "I would always tell him he's from another planet, he's from another time. I wanted to give him that belt, because I wanted him to sparkle and shine."
Surprisingly (or maybe not), Newsday calls Charlie an “unlikely frontrunner.” We’ll see if America responds to Charlie’s quirkiness.
