Before American Idol:
Jimmy Iovine, who grew up in Brooklyn, started his career as a recording engineer in the 1970s, and he didn't have a hard time attracting big artists. From the outset, Jimmy worked with iconic musicians like John Lennon and Bruce Springsteen. Once he transitioned into producing in the 1980s, he worked with the likes of U2, Stevie Nicks, Dire Straits, and Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers.

Fast-forward to the '90s! In 1991, Jimmy co-founded Interscope Records (now Interscope-Geffen-A&M), the home of artists including Eminem, Lady Gaga, and Mary J. Blige. He has served as chairman of the label since 2001.

Side projects:
Don't be surprised if Jimmy Iovine decides to produce a movie while running his record label and mentoring contestants on American Idol. He has already gotten his feet wet in the movie business, co-producing the hit films 8 Mile and Get Rich or Die Trying.
