American Idol’s Candice Glover on Her Emotional Moment With Nicki Minaj — Interview

Candice Glover’s emotional hometown visit on American Idol 2013 this past week brought judge Nicki Minaj to tears. While she was giving a critique of Candice’s moving performance of “Next to Me” on the Top 3 performances show after the singer’s hometown visit video, Nicki got so choked up, she literally couldn’t speak.

In an interview after the American Idol performances, Candice Glover talked about the connection she feels with Nicki and how she was close to tears herself the entire night.

It seemed like you and Nicki had a moment tonight where she was so emotional and you were so emotional. Can you talk a little bit about what was going on there?

I think Nicki knows better than anyone what it’s like to come from nowhere and to have your career be so big. She’s phenomenal and knowing where she’s been and what she’s gone through.

I think after watching my visit and seeing I’m from a small island where music, like I said, is not a big deal there, so just going back there. I remember driving down the same road that I used to just stand on with my cousins and not have anything to do. Like, work on a job and then put all that money into bills and just being miserable, I think she knows what that feels like, so I think that’s why she got emotional and she was just so proud of me, saying how my confidence is better.

Like I said on the show, I used to be the most insecure little girl in the corner, no personality, having to take training like the rumor that’s going around. [Laughter] But anyway, I’ve come so far on this show and I think she realizes that, especially since this is my third time. I think that’s why I was so emotional. Top 3 is amazing, so no matter what happens tomorrow I feel like I’ve already won anyway.

Randy said you topped your own moment.

That was crazy, oh my gosh. I don't know, I've just been near tears all night and I don't know. I always look forward to Randy's comments because he's been here for twelve years so he knows exactly what a moment is and what's not. I'm just happy and I'm ecstatic, like I said. I'm speechless! I could sit here all day and talk to y’all.

Nobody gets two moments per season, it's just not allowed!

I know, that makes me feel so good.

You broke the rules!

What can I say? I'm a rebel. [Laughs]
