America’s Got Talent 2013 Recap: Semifinals Round 1! 8/27/13

Things are heating up in our first semifinals episode recap of America's Got Talent Season 8! The performance episodes have been amazing this season thus far, so there was no doubt that the semifinals would be even better. We saw everything from a camel joke, a Spice Girls cover, and awkward matchmaking. We would expect nothing less!

Right off the bat, we get some very sad news, as the KriStef Brothers are skipping the competition after one of them fell on his head. If he Get better soon! That means that Red Panda is back in the game! Let's hope she can bowl the judges over. (See what we did there? "Bowl"?)

First up is Tone the Chiefrocca, whom Mel inexplicably surprisingly brought back into the competish last week with her wild-card save. He starts out with a choir, but then it's the same old schtick, and while Mel loves it, Howard says he "bored outta my skull." But he does think the guys would be good on a sitcom.

Red Panda gets her second chance, Wonder Woman costume and all, but she falters when one of the bowls does not join its bowl brethren. Howie stands by his choice of bringing her back, and Howard loved it, but Mel feels it's done before. If only Red Panda could have used Wonder Woman's lasso to grab the stray bowl. And why does Howie keep using the word "warble"? Does he know that it means "to sing"?

Impressionist Angela Hoover is up with her takes on Arianna Huffington and Kourtney Kardashian. (The Kardashians? How dare Angela take jabs at America's family!) Howard and Heidi think the jokes themselves are just okay, but Howie and Mel are a big fans.

Also getting another chance tonight is Duo Resonance, who bring a clear box into the mix. The judges like what they see, and the duo are clearly talented, but Howard thinks the box wasn't helping things.

We like mentalist Collins Key, and his matchmaking act is cute. But the judges aren't impressed, and he did pretty much do the same basic gimmick as last time, with him knowing which words the judges will choose. Plus, that "perfect girl" seems like she was probably part of Collins's act. Don't hate us, Keypers!

Acrobatic team Innovative Force is next, but their stunts don't impress Howie or Mel, even though Heidi is head-over-heels for them.

We get a little extra Spice Girls nostalgia this week with beat-boxing singer Dave Fenley covering their "Say You'll Be There." Mel loves it — big shocker! — but Howard is not feeling the girl power, calling it a "train wreck." We don't think it's the best song choice, but Dave tells the crowd that no one could ruin this moment for him. You go, Dave! Zig-a-zig ah!

Cutie comedian Taylor Williamson takes the stage, and he has the crowd rolling in the aisles. Howie is right there with him, calling it the best act of the night. And singer Jonathan Allen does "Bring Him Home" from Les Mis. Will he dream a dream by getting to the finals? The judges didn't think he was up to par.

Shadow-dancers Catapult Entertainment does its shadowy thing, and they're definitely a crowd fave, but the judges are confused by the story. Maybe Mel was just bitter that they didn't use a Spice Girls song.

Singer Cami Bradley does "I Can't Help Falling in Love With You." Three of the judges can't help falling for this performance, but Mel is a naysayer, as usual. Turn that frown upside-down, Mel! And opera trio Forte impresses the judges with "Unchained Melody." It kinda makes us want to bust out the pottery wheel, a la Ghost.

But which six performers will prove victorious after tomorrow's results show? We can't wait to find out! In the meantime, who's up for some sexy pottery-spinning?
