Something about the Anamaria situation last night didn’t sit well with us, and it wasn’t just her very slender frame. As we watched Mr. Jay first confront her at the photo shoot and Tyra again at panel, their interventions certainly seemed genuine, but also strangely timed. We had to wonder – did they not notice this earlier?
What appears to be a unique or striking feature in person might not photograph well. We’ve seen it on this show before. A girl can’t work her angular face, or she has trouble positioning her gazelle-like legs. It’s understandable that issues might arise when someone suddenly has to be conscious of lighting, a camera, and a roomful of staring eyes. And never mind all that – how many times has any of us looked at a picture of ourselves and thought, “Do I actually look this awful all the time?” In the same way that not every tall person can play basketball, not every attractive girl can model. But when the judges were discussing Anamaria’s weight last night, they were questioning her health, not just her career.
The girls had to wear bikinis for the bully word photo shoot, and Tyra explained at judging that the shot she chose for Anamaria was the one where her body was the least exposed, as the lack of clothing drew alarming attention to her thinness. This would make sense except that Anamaria also wore a bikini during casting, and the only conversation we saw between her and the judges was about IMG. Was there any discussion of her weight then? Was that footage edited out? Maybe. But she ended up in the house anyway, only to be sent home for something we’re betting at least one person in that room noticed. This wasn’t an issue of a masculine face, or oddly-shaped lips. If her weight was really as concerning as they led us to believe last night, she wouldn’t have had to contort her body during a photo shoot to make it obvious. Many of the girls in the house seemed to pick up on it right away.
When Tyra bid farewell to Anamaria, there was just a hint of back-peddling: “You might be the healthiest girl in the world. You might be able to race me down the block and leave me panting behind you. But it might not hurt to eat some avocado and a little bit of bread with some butter on it, so that you can book jobs and project an image that doesn’t feel as if you’re hurting your body.” All very important points, and Anamaria definitely needed to hear them. We’re just wondering why it took so long.
