Born Alexander Jenkins in South Bronx, J. Alexander initially dreamed of becoming an accountant. No, seriously. But after meeting then-president of Elite Model Management, Monique Pillard, he decided he belonged in the fashion industry, which is good because accounting can get super boring. Impressed with his style, Pillard signed him to her agency and sent him to Toyko, where he graced the runway for Jean Paul Gaultier. He also met Tyra Banks
at a runway show, and he began to give her walking lessons. This marked the start of a long lasting, professional relationship. Since 1991, J. Alexander has coached models and established himself as the preferred contact for popular designers such as Valentino, Galliano, Bill Blass, Alexander McQueen, Chanel, and Nina Ricci.
