The Walking Dead’s Andrew Lincoln (Rick Grimes) is currently packing heat on the October 2014 cover of Men’s Fitness. Life is good.

But, when you think about it, it is kind of weird that the guy holding signs for Keira Knightley in Love, Actually is now a 40-year-old action hero. Andy isn’t just a badass leading man on AMC’s No. 1 ratings darling, though — he’s also become a heartthrob and a sex symbol. Part of that has to be tied to the physical transformation of his character, Rick Grimes, from the pale, clean-shaven sheriff’s deputy of Season 1 to the bearded man who bites people’s necks off in late Season 4/early Season 5.

Andy told Men’s Fitness he hired a trainer for the first time last season, to help him bulk up. He said he’s usually more of a runner than a gym guy, but his trainer made him stop the distance running and add free weights to build some mass. Andy also said he (shudder) cut carbs and sugar out of his diet, even though it wasn’t easy or fun. “Why would you want to do that to yourself, man?” he asked. Good question.

Watch the video below to see Andy behind-the-scenes of his Men’s Fitness shoot; he talks about going on a diet for the first time in his life, and you can see cool black-and-white shots of the British actor a horse, making him look like a retro Western star. Nice.

Speaking of nice, Steven Yeun (Glenn Rhee) had sweet things to say about yet another co-star, telling Men’s Fitness something we’ve heard before about Andy: He sets a tone of kindness and professionalism on set. “We’re working these hard hours in the the sun. Everyone should be breaking down; we should have divas, these Hollywood clichés,” Steven told the magazine. “But no, there’s Andy, and he’s showing up and pushing it harder than anything. He’s the culture of the show. I mean, if your No. 1 guy isn’t a diva, then who can be?” Preach!

Andy seems like a straight-up perfect human being, but here’s a question for you: Would you give up sugar and carbs, if it would help you look this good? You wouldn’t be able to share any of Carl’s pudding … but (scarily enough) Mary’s BBQ stand might still be an option.

The Walking Dead Season 5 premieres Sunday, October 12 at 9 p.m. ET on AMC.
