Anti-Abortion Groups Seek to Boycott Sales of Girl Scout Cookies

It’s that time of year, when boxes of Thin Mints and Tagalongs disappear as soon as we get our hands on them. That’s right, it’s that magical season known as Girl Scout cookie time. But if one vocal political group has it’s way, nobody will be enjoying their cookies this year.

MSN reports that several anti-abortion groups recently announced that they’re urging their members to boycott buying Girl Scout cookies. The groups say that while the Girl Scouts organizational leadership has not clearly voiced a pro-choice stance, since they support pro-choice candidates such as Wendy Davis, Democratic State Senator of Texas, the organization must be against right to life proponents.

The boycott stems from anger over Facebook and Twitter status updates in support of Davis as well as Health and Human Services Secretary (and pro-choice) Kathleen Sebelius. The Girl Scouts say that they were simply highlighting stories of female leadership in what many consider to be “The Year of the Woman.”

Girl Scouts spokesperson Kelly Parisi said in a recent statement that the Girl Scouts have no political affiliation, and do not endorse politicians of any party. According to Parisi, “We think it is appropriate for us to encourage conversation about what makes a female leader.”

Lucia Weinmeister, spokeswoman for the Girl Scouts of Central Texas, acknowledges that boycotts like this definitely move people to action. "It does fire up people who are against what we do, or what they think we do," she said, adding, "It also fires up our strongest supporters." Weinmeister pointed out that boycotted areas sometimes end up having the best sales in the region.

We’d have to side with the girls in the brown vests here. Delicious cookies should be above the political fray, no matter your stance on the issues. Now if you’ll excuse us, these Thin Mints aren’t going to eat themselves!
