Ariana Grande has been dubbed the “mini Mariah Carey” by more than a few folks in the music industry, and until now it’s been mostly due to her powerful pipes and killer range. That, and the 20-year-old diva’s preference for a throwback ‘90s R&B sound. But now fans are noticing yet another similarity: her choreography — and not everyone is in favor of the homage.

Ariana has never been known for her dance moves — she’s more of a let the voice speak for itself type of gal — but her new hit single with Iggy Azalea, “Problem,” is a fast-paced ditty that really requires getting down with the beat. So the Nickelodeon star has shed her squeaky clean shell (just a little), and explored some sexier choreography in her performances at the Radio Disney Music Awards and the iHeart Radio Music Awards. Cute, right?

But some have noted that a few of the moves are more than a bit familiar. In fact, they sort of eerily resemble Mariah’s routine for “Honey” back in the late ‘90s. Now, it’s mostly one or two dance moves, so we wouldn’t jump to plagiarism. More like a tribute, if you ask us!

You be the judge: Is Ariana’s dance too spot-on, or totally appropriate? Watch the videos below and share your thoughts in the comments.
