As tough as it can be to navigate the sometimes murky waters of a romantic relationship — especially in Hollywood — family relationships can, at times, be so much more complicated. Someone who knows a thing or two about that? Ariana Grande. When she covered the September 2014 issue of Seventeen, she revealed that she no longer speaks to her father.
Although the Sam & Cat star was very close with her grandfather, who passed away on July 22, she doesn’t necessarily share the same relationship with her dad. In fact, she admitted to the magazine that one of the toughest things she’s ever had to deal with has been falling out of touch with him.
“It’s private, but it happened last year,” the 21-year-old said. “It took me so long to be okay with it. The thing that got me there was embracing the fact that I am made up of half my dad, and a lot of my traits come from him. So much of me comes from my father, and for so long, I didn’t like that about myself.”
Situations like those are always tricky to deal with, but eventually, Ariana was able to make peace with it.
“I had to accept that it’s okay not to get along with somebody and still love them,” she said.
In happier news? Ariana has a lot to celebrate. Her career is on fire, and her next album, My Everything, drops August 25. And have you been able to turn on the radio without hearing “Problem” all summer? Didn’t think so!
“I feel like for the first time in my life, I’m really okay,” Ariana said. “I used to freak out about everything all the time … But now, I feel I can handle everything that comes my way with a calm energy.”
