Ariel Winter & Her Sister Respond to Their Mom’s Criticism (UPDATE)

UPDATE (6/10/2017 at 1:13 p.m. ET): Ariel Winter and her older sister Shanelle Gray, who became Ariel's legal guardian after she became emancipated, have some words for their mother Chrystal Workman.

Chrystal recently made headlines after criticizing Ariel's clothing choices.

"My mother has always been dreaming of the spotlight, which is why she had two daughters," Shanelle told Page Six.

"I think this is her way of keeping her name in the headlines."

Ariel seemed to share similar sentiments when she took to Twitter to call out her mother, though she didn't use names.

"What's sad is that you lie consistently," the 18-year-old wrote. "Also, why is it that you only choose to talk to me through the press? I'm doing just fine. Toxic."

Original story (6/7/2017 at 2:05 p.m. ET): Ariel Winter, who is known for portraying Alex Dunphy on Modern Family, has been open about her family drama.

Although her character has a seemingly perfect family, Ariel’s situation is far from perfect in real life.

Ariel’s estranged mother, Chrystal Workman, is speaking out against her daughter, saying she shouldn’t be posting revealing photos on social media.

Chrystal tells In Touch, “I feel sad that she feels the need to expose herself when it’s not necessary.”

She continues, “Ariel is smart, beautiful and talented. She is a legitimate actress. She does not need to do this. She is beautiful with her clothes on.”

The 19-year-old has previously accused her mother of attempting to “sexualize” the actress from a young age.

However, Chrystal, who continues to deny accusations from her daughter, says, “I feel sad that she feels the need to expose herself when it’s not necessary.”

The estranged mother concludes with defending herself against the emotional and physical abuse accusations from Ariel.

When the actress was 14 years old, her older sister, Shanelle Gray, acted as her guardian after allegations of their mother’s abuse surfaced.

Ariel later became an officially emancipated minor in 2015.

During an interview in March 2016 with Good Morning America, the Smurfs star revealed she hasn’t spoken to her mother in over three years.

After this family drama, the petite actress made headlines once again as online bullies began to dig into her pictures for her breast size.

She told People, “I really felt bad about myself. I didn’t feel happy. I just kept saying, ‘What am I going to wear? There’s nothing for me to wear at the beach, at the pool.’”

In addition to the insecurity about her breast size, Ariel revealed the extreme level of back pain caused by her large chest.

She told Glamour, “I really couldn't stand up straight for a long period of time. It started to hurt so bad that I couldn't take the pain.”

In June 2015, Ariel — who lives with her 29-year-old boyfriend — announced her successful breast reduction surgery from a 32F to a 34D.

Since her surgery, the actress has been dressing in more exposed outfits than fans are used to seeing.

Alex’s portrayer, who has been receiving criticism because of her outfit choices, posted a picture to Instagram that reads, “Why TF does anyone care that I didn’t dress casual like everyone else for the panel?

“Why do I have to be like everyone else?"

The Modern Family star’s post continued, “Why can’t people just let other people feel good about themselves and do what they want? WEAR WHATEVER YOU WANT PEOPLE!

“As long as you feel good about yourself that’s all that matters. I know I did. Don’t ever let anyone stifle who you are and how you express yourself. Rant over :)”

Modern Family returns this fall to ABC.
