‘Arya’ Is the Fastest Growing Girl’s Name, Thanks to Game of Thrones
The newest obsession for TV watchers everywhere is HBO’s Game of Thrones. A book adaptation from George R.R. Martin full of magic and dragons, endlessly interwoven plot lines, and expertly developed characters will have that effect on you. It’s no surprise, then, that the name ‘Arya’ has shot up 298 spaces on the list of most popular female baby names since GoT’s premiere in 2011.
The young lady on the show certainly has every quality a parent could want for their daughter: bravery, cleverness, beauty, smarts, a strong sense of family, and so on. Sure, Arya can be a bit bossy at times, she gets herself into a fair amount of trouble, and she does have a rather lengthy revenge hit list that she recites periodically, but what child doesn’t? Well, not the hit list (hopefully), but every little girl tends to be a bit bossy and get into trouble now and then.
It is refreshing to see more parents branching out into fantasy land in search of a truly unique name, but if this trend continues, ‘Arya’ won’t stay unique for long! Its alternate spelling, ‘Aria,’ has also moved up 66 spaces and is holding at #91, while ‘Arya’ is still trailing at #413.
Another notable GoT name that has moved significantly since the show’s premiere in 2011 is Emilia, which has moved 55 spaces, from #323 to #268. We have no doubt that this movement is due to actress Emilia Clarke’s incredible portrayal of Daenerys Targaryn, the Mother of Dragons.
On the boys’ side, specific names GoT names haven’t garnered much interest, but a rising trend that may or may not have anything to do with the popular show is to name boys King (which moved 133 spaces, from #389 to #256) or Prince (which moved 23 spaces from #480 to #457).
