Shailene Woodley Stunned by Reports of ‘Ascendant’ Heading to TV
The Divergent franchise certainly seems to be diverging from the usual blockbuster trajectory…. and the news has blindsided its biggest star, Shailene Woodley.
Ascendant, the fourth and final movie based on author Veronica Roth’s dystopian YA series, was scheduled to hit theaters in June 2017, but now it appears the studio behind it has other plans.
Variety reports Lionsgate is planning on making Ascendant a TV event instead of a big-screen release. That TV event would then segue into a standalone TV series in the Divergent universe.
This idea is unconventional but not entirely surprising, given the franchise’s box office history. Divergent earned $151 million domestically, Insurgent made $130 million, but Allegiant only brought in $66 million.
Coincidentally, Shailene appeared at a Comic-Con event on July 21 to promote her new movie, Snowden, so of course reporters asked her about the Ascendant news.
“Honestly, I was on a plane when all that happened, and I landed, and I’m like, ‘Whoa, what’s going on?’” the 24-year-old responded, per Us Weekly.
The Hollywood Reporter expects some of the franchise’s actors to drop out if the movie does indeed move to TV, and Shailene certainly isn’t committing.
“I need to talk and find out what the details are,” she added.
Stay tuned, people!
