Baby Judith or Daryl Dixon: Whose Death on The Walking Dead Would Upset You More? (POLL)

Yep, we have garlic in our souls today, dropping some dark Sophie’s Choice speculation on you re: two characters on The Walking Dead.

It’s most likely that both baby Judith Grimes and Daryl Dixon (Norman Reedus) will survive the rest of Season 4 — and maybe the entire series. We’re not buying that Judith is gone, even with that empty car seat at the prison, leaving Rick Grimes (Andrew Lincoln) and Carl Grimes (Chandler Riggs) grieving at the end of Episode 8. But we’re just curious how you would react if anything happened to either Daryl or Judith. Whose death would upset you more?

Daryl’s fans are legendary for their threat to riot if he dies, but what about the baby? Would you riot for Judith, or just stare silently at the wall, wondering what this world had come to? Would you be more upset at her death — she’s only a baby! — or less upset because it’s only a TV death — it’s not like a real baby will die — and Judith isn’t exactly bringing wit and wisdom to the show. She’s not an iconic character like Daryl, who seems like the kind of guy who would survive the zombie apocalypse. The show would be a lesser thing without him.

We’ve been worried about Judith for a while. It would make sense for a baby to struggle to survive in this world, especially when — if she’s still alive in the back half of Season 4 — she’s on the run without food or shelter. Plus (comic book spoilers!) Judith did die in the original comic books, during the final prison battle. So there’s a precedent.

Then again, as former showrunner Glen Mazzara put it when defending his position to not kill Judith, that baby is a victory for Rick’s whole group.

"One of the things that I’ve been very mindful of is that our group has to have victories,” he told the L.A. Times. “If they are just staying beaten up every week and there’s absolutely no win, it’s going to feel very, very bleak for the audience. That baby’s survival right now is a necessary win because otherwise it is too bleak and that’s not something I’m interested in doing. I don’t think people will tune in. They’ll tune in for an exciting horror show, but they’re not going to tune in for a very, very bleak thing that you can’t imagine these people are able to survive. I just don’t believe that the show can get that bleak.”

Hear, hear.

Where do you stand? We don’t want Daryl or Judith to die, but we didn’t want Hershel or Dale or Andrea or Merle to die either. People die in this world. Which death would affect you the most? Vote in the poll below. Don’t take the easy way out — pick a side!

The Walking Dead Season 4 returns to AMC on February 9, 2014, at 9 p.m. ET.

Bye, Daryl!

Baby Judith can peace out.
