For all of you who were hoping that Kenneth “Babyface” Edmonds and Toni Braxton were going to get together, we’re sorry but we’re going to have to shatter that fantasy. Those two might make sweet, sweet R&B music together, but there’s another woman that the singer/producer will be using as his love song inspiration these days: his new fiancée, Nicole Patenburg!
In a surprising development, Babyface revealed that he was engaged to his longtime girlfriend in a February 6 interview with BET, where he was promoting his Love, Marriage, and Divorce album with Toni Braxton.
"Would you ever consider getting married again?" Toni asked her collaborator, two which Babyface shockingly replied, "I've already considered it. I'm engaged, so yes." Who knew?!
The ‘90s hitmaker began dating his former backup dancer Nicole in 2007 — two years after he divorced businesswoman Tracey Edmonds after 13 years of marriage. (Tracey is now famously dating former NFL player Deion Sanders.) And while it might be an unexpected turn for those lesser acquainted with Babyface’s personal life, those who are big fans of the Grammy winner shouldn’t be too taken aback, considering he and Nicole have a five-year-old daughter together.
One thing’s for certain, the 54-year-old crooner (responsible for such hits as Boyz II Men’s “I’ll Make Love to You,” Alicia Keys’ “Girl on Fire,” and, most recently, Ariana Grande’s Yours Truly album) has learned from his past relationship mistakes — and he’s into this one for the long haul.
"The main thing is being honest with yourself and being honest with your feelings," he told Toni in the interview. "When we're not honest with ourselves we just accept situations, don't talk about them, and as you said, ignore the elephant in the room. You better recognize there is an elephant in the room and deal with it, because a lot of times the elephant in the room is the one that you put in there, so you have to deal with it."
Congratulations to the happy couple! Now go get to writing, Babyface!
