When ABC first announced Bachelor in Paradise as its latest Bachelor/ette spin-off, we were honestly a bit confused by the premise — as were the contestants and the rest of the viewers. But did that muddled set-up stop America from tuning in, or was the lure of past pot stirrers like Clare Crawley and Chris Bukowski enough?

A glance at the ratings for last night’s premiere says… well, a little of both? Coming in with a 1.3 rating in the 18-49 category, with 5 million viewers, the ep wasn’t a total failure; it was third to America Ninja Warrior and Master Chef in its time slot in the major network category.

That being said, it was still down 13 percent from Bachelor Pad 3’s 2012 premiere, which snagged a 1.5 rating in the coveted demo. Not only that, but it also dropped significantly from last week’s Bachelorette finale, which notched a 1.9 — though that is to be expected with a new, less-established show.

We still have high hopes for those crazy love seekers south of the border, though. Next week’s outing will kick things off with a bang (literally!) as Chris Harrison and the crew promise it will contain the most shocking event that’s ever happened in the franchise. And though Chris has a habit of making such bold claims, we actually believe him this time (find out why here!). If that doesn’t grab viewers, we don’t know what will!
