Even though Kaitlyn Bristowe has a tattoo of a bird on the back of each arm, she's also revealed that the animal is her biggest fear. On this week’s Episode 6 of The Bachelorette, she ran away from a flock of birds in a Dublin park during her one-on-one with Nick Viall. She was seriously freaked out! So what’s the deal?

According to Kaitlyn, it’s all got to do with the flapping. She explained on her Facebook Q&A with YahooTV earlier this week, “I’m scared of the flapping! Tattoos don’t flap. Also the birds are the only kind of bird that remember how to fly home so I loved that meaning.”

Makes sense. And in case this is still confusing, she shared a pretty shocking backstory while talking to AOL.

“I think it’s the flapping that really scares me,” she reiterated. “My grandma had a bird when I was little and my mom is terrified of birds, like deathly afraid of birds. So my uncle used to think it was this funny thing to let it out of the cage, and my mom would grab me and shake and lock us in a bathroom and cry. Like, obviously I’m gonna be scared of birds.”

She also went into more detail explaining the meaning of her tattoo, and why it was more important than her fear.

“I like old school sailor tattoos — I know it’s weird — but this is the only bird that remembers how to fly home, and so I liked the meaning behind that,” she explained. “And I can’t really see them, so it’s all good.”

We love the meaning, too, and Kaitlyn’s tattoo is gorgeous! Hopefully, she doesn’t have to deal with birds again for the rest of the season — even though her freakout this week was pretty hilarious.
