The Voice 2013 Live Recap: Last Night of Battle Rounds! (10/22/13)

After the October 21 round of battles, we're not sure what to expect from the one-hour October 22 episode! Coaches Adam Levine, Christina Aguilera, Cee Lo Green, and Blake Shelton have already spiced up Season 5 by recruiting A-list talent and not being afraid to use their steals.

In case you need it (we did), here's a quick refresher on how battle rounds work: Two artists on the same team duet to impress their respective coach. Only one walks away a winner but, thanks to the steal, the other might not have to leave the show, just join another team. Seeing as Battle Rounds end tonight, steals are few and far between but that doesn't mean the show won't be exciting.

Keep refreshing this page throughout the show for up-to-the-minute news on all the latest Voice action.

Jonny Gray vs. Shawn Smith

To begin the last round of battles, who better to call up then two military men? Jonny Gray of the Air Force and Shawn Smith of the Army faced off to keep a spot on Team Cee Lo Green. Cee Lo's song of choice: a perfect mix between country and rock, "Refugee" by Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers. During rehearsals, Jonny earns compliment for his charisma while Sean gets props for his husky voice but is advised to up his stage presence.

Prepared for battle, the two head to the show for a classic Air Force/Army throwdown. Let the battle begin!

Leading off, Jonny uses everything he's got (read: his long rocker hair) to make Cee Lo pick him. Meanwhile, Shawn goes for deep and gravely. Together, they totally rock but The Voice ain't no duet competition. Cee Lo's got a choice to make.

"I believed every single word of everything you just did," fellow rocker Adam Levine says of the two. "That was a wonderful performance." He sides with Jonny but seems torn by the choice. Blake calls the performance "hot" and casts his vote for "Big Sexy" Shawn. Christina says she wishes she would have pushed for Jonny during blind auditions. Will he stick around? That's up to Cee Lo who, after waxing poetic about "the soldier in their songs," ends up picking...Jonny! Sergeant Shawn heads home with head held high.

Preston Pohl vs. Barry Black

On Team Adam, we've got Preston Pohl sparring off with Barry Black. Because they both love soul music, Adam pairs the two good buddies together. "We're going to go classic on this one," the coach says, giving them "I Wish It Would Rain" by The Temptations. Nice choice, Mr. Levine.

The theme of practices appears to be "what to do with a rasp" with both men getting feedback on controlling (or not controlling) their soulful croons. Adam advises Barry that his trademark mouth horn could be taken as "humorous" when perhaps he wants to strike a more serious note for battles. But dude, that's his thing!

"If they both do an equal performance, Adam's put himself in a precarious position," adviser Ryan Tedder of OneRepublic muses offstage. Both Barry and Preston are just so good, it'll be a tough choice to make! We hear you, Ryan.

And man, do we hear (and love!) Preston and Barry as they start their performance. They take us all the way back to when The Temptations reigned and we all wished it would rain. Again, nice choice, Mr. Levine. "It's almost like your voice comes from a different era," Christina says of Preston, who's also Cee Lo's pick. Sorry, Blake. Looks like you're going solo on liking Barry best.

Who is Adam most tempted to see make the next round? That would be Preston with Barry getting the boot despite Adam saying he liked his "natural" use of his mouth trumpet talent.

From the sidelines, Blake tries to get Cee Lo to steal Barry but the coach with the only steal left to play decides to wait, saying he's still looking for "that prize." Bummer, Barry.

The Montage: Team Blake and Team Cee Lo

Unfortunately, there's just not enough time to air all of the battles that rock The Voice stage. Cue the skillful video montage. Here's who made it through: On Team Blake, Holly Henry (beats Cilla Chan) and Brandon Chase (beats Emily Randolph) and on Team Cee Lo, Tamara Chauniece (beats Keaira LaShae). We can't wait to see more from you all!

Olivia Henken vs. Stephanie Anne Johnson

To round out her team, Xtina pairs tax preparer Olivia Henken with cruise ship singer Stephanie Anne Johnson (who, by the by, was adviser Ed Sheeran's favorite blind audition). Not shaken by the praise for her competitor, Olivia takes the assigned song ("Done" by The Band Perry) by the horns, impressing both Christina and Ed. But Stephanie refuses to be left behind in the country dust despite her unfamiliarity with the tune.

Encouraged to be playful with the attitude-heavy single, Olivia and Stephanie don their armor (aka super cute dresses) and attempt to be named the sassiest of them all. Olivia commands the stage, shaking her blonde hair like there's no tomorrow, while Stephanie focuses on hitting the high notes and having a little fun. Adding a touch of theatrics as the performance comes to an end, the women prove they're not hear to play nice.

Blake, country star that he is, loves the number. "I have to go against the grain," he says as he picks Olivia over Cee Lo and Adam's favorite, Stephanie. Why Olivia? Adam think it's because she kind of "looks like your wife a little bit, maybe?" Miranda Lambert. That's who she reminded us of! Thanks, Adam!

Faced with a tough choice (but aren't they all tough choices lately?), Christina says d-o-n-e to Stephanie but, never fear, Cee Lo's right there waiting in the wings, prepared to use his last steal (and make Stephanie's grandma the happiest grandma in town). How about them divas?
