In case you haven’t heard the sad news, Love & Hip Hop Atlanta star Benzino was shot during the funeral procession for his mom, Mary Scott, this past weekend in Massachusetts. Benzino suffered several non-fatal injuries and is currently in the hospital. Now on the mend, the reality star is speaking out about the events of that horrifying afternoon.
In his telephone call with TMZ (the video above), Zino, aka Raymond Scott, gave a pretty detailed account of what happened:
“The only reason I was going towards Plymouth, Mass., where the funeral was being held… was because Stevie J. had popped up out of nowhere and gave me a call and said that he was in Plymouth and said ‘I’m here to go to church.’”
Benzino then goes into the terrifying ordeal in which he was shot: “I drove up on the left side towards the hearse at the beginning to see if it was anybody and to see if was her [his mother’s] procession and then gun shots rang out. I heard about seven, eight shots and it was going through the window, going through the car, hitting me. The only thing I did was maneuver away. I sped up to move away.”
When Zino spoke with the Boston Herald, he added that he eventually got out of the car and ran away. Luckily, several relatives in nearby cars picked him up and took him to the hospital.
The alleged shooter, identified as Benzino’s 36-year-old nephew Gaia Scott, is currently in police custody and was set to be arraigned yesterday. Gaia is facing charges of assault with intent to murder, a charge to which Gaia’s attorney, Christopher Coughlin, said Gaia will plead not guilty.
According to the Herald, there had been tension between Benzino, Gaia, and Gaia’s mother, Maureen Scott, over the treatment of Benzino’s mom, Mary. In addition, as Benzino mentioned in the video above, there had been several discrepancies over money.
Benzino hasn’t spoken with Gaia or Maureen since the shooting, saying, “I don’t even consider [Maureen] my sister anymore.”
