Bill Hader Leaving Saturday Night Live — The End of Stefon?

Wetpaint’s hottest news story is HADER. Located on the Upper Lower Side of Studio 8H, this story has everything: heartbreak, ended homoerotic tension, a source whose name sounds like a German cough syrup.

Yes-yes-yes-yes-yes, our imitation of Weekend Update's resident city correspondent, Stefon, is our way of paying tribute to Saturday Night Live power-hitter Bill Hader, whose imminent departure from the venerable sketch comedy show was announced this morning by New York Times columnist Dave Itzkoff.

It's sad but true: The Season 38 finale this Saturday, May 18, will be Bill's last episode as a full-time cast member.

"It was a hard decision, but it has to happen at some point," Bill told the newspaper. "It got to a point where I said, ‘Maybe it’s just time to go."

He also added that his decision was partly motivated by the departures of friends like Kristen Wiig and Andy Samberg and by his hope to move his family to Los Angeles — especially since his wife, Maggie Carey, is finding fame as a director. (She helmed this year's comedy The To Do List.)

Executive producer Lorne Michaels told the Times of being reminded of comedy stars like Dan Aykroyd when he first saw Bill perform.

"In terms of intelligence and talent, he was in that same tradition," Lorne explained. "He was so completely committed to the art of it and enough a student of it that there’s something strikingly original. He didn’t explode onto the air, but gradually he found his voice, and that became a huge thing."

The good news is that the door is likely wide open for him to return as host, as Kristen did this past week.

And should some sort of send-off happen this Saturday, host Ben Affleck and musical guest Kanye West will be there to celebrate.

As Stefon would say, "Yeee-ayyyy!"
