2016 Billboard Music Awards: Celine Dion Receives ICON Award (VIDEO)
The word “icon” gets thrown around a lot in the music industry, but no one can argue against its use when it comes to someone like Celine Dion.
So it was amazing to see the diva be honored for her three-decade career at tonight’s Billboard Music Awards 2016 with the ICON Award. And especially moving, considering the difficulty of the past six months since the passing of her husband, René Angélil, in January, who received a tribute of his own during Celine's introduction.
Taking a night off from her Las Vegas residency at Caesars Palace, Celine graced us with her stunning gift on Sunday night, debuting her new single, a cover of Queen’s “The Show Must Go On” — a song that had a lot of meaning for the 48-year-old and her late spouse.
From the stirring strings (via electronic violin sensation Lindsey Stirling) to her powerhouse vocals, we couldn’t help but feel the weight of this performance. Cue the tears!
Can’t argue a talent like that — not that anyone was going to dispute the BBMA’s choice of the ICON recipient this year. After all, this is someone who can boast five Grammys, two Oscars, seven AMAs, and, most impressively, almost 250 million albums sold worldwide. No big deal.
In other words, more tears were in store when she her son, René-Charles, 15, made a surprise appearance to present the award to his mom. Celine immediately burst into tears, saying, "I'm so sorry ... I don't want to cry in front of you."
"Wow, this is such a tremendous honor of course," she continued. "I want to thank the fans for traveling through music with me in good and bad times ... and most importantly my beloved husband, who I know will continue to watch over me from above."
The songstress is in good company for the honor, which has given the lifetime achievement award to Jennifer Lopez, Prince, Stevie Wonder, and Neil Diamond in recent years.
Congratulations, Celine! There’s no one like you!
