B.J. Novak on Mindy Kaling: “No One Knew If We Were Together or Not, Including Us”

With Mindy Kaling and B.J. Novak's hilarious hot-and-cold chemistry on The Office — and then on The Mindy Project — everyone wants to know the deets on the writers-slash-actors' off-screen romance.

That very topic was top of mind for one Watch What Happens Live! viewer, who called in during B.J.'s recent appearance on the Bravo talk show to get the scoop straight from the 34-year-old.

"I would say it was a great and terrible chemistry, and it reflected what we were like in real life," B.J. began. "No one ever knew if we were together or not, including us. We weren't always on the same page on a given day or a given hour. We fought a lot. We were each other's best friends. We were inseparable and not talking to each other, often on the same day. If she was gone, they would ask me where she was, and vice versa. We were like E.T. and Elliott a little bit.

And, as B.J. says, the Office writers used his and Mindy's unique relationship as inspiration for their characters on the NBC sitcom: "It was hard to define, and I think very funny to people witnessing it, and that's what actually gave them the idea to write Ryan and Kelly that way."

Host Andy Cohen noted that everyone seems to want B.J. and Mindy to get married, to which B.J. replied, "Yes, but nobody wants us to get divorced. I think you have to be very careful when you have an explosive connection with somebody. We might be better as best friends."

Well-spoken, sir! Glad to hear you have your lives figured out a bit better than your TV alter-egos.
