Just three episodes into its fourth season, Boardwalk Empire is already set for another go-round. HBO announced that it has renewed the series for Season 5.
The show centers on the seediness and crime of Atlantic City, New Jersey, during the 1920s and 1930s — the Prohibition era — focusing specifically on Nucky Thompson, a political heavyweight played by Golden Globe-winner Steve Buscemi.
Empire has been a critical and commercial success ever since the pilot — helmed by acclaimed film director Martin Scorsese with a massive budget of $18 million — premiered on September 9, 2010.
"Thanks to Terry Winter, Martin Scorsese, Tim Van Patten, Howard Korder and their stellar team, Boardwalk Empire remains in a class by itself," HBO programming president Michael Lombard wrote in a statement. "I look forward to another electrifying season of this impeccably crafted series."
The show airs Sundays at 9 p.m. ET on HBO. The current season boasts a powerhouse cast, including Kelly MacDonald, Michael Shannon, Michael K. Williams, Jack Huston, Jeffrey Wright, Ron Livingston, and Gretchen Mol. (Past cast member Bobby Cannavale just won the 2013 Emmy for Outstanding Supporting Actor in a Drama Series for his role in Season 3.)
We just wonder if any of the aforementioned talents resorted to any Empire-like shadiness to ensure the show's return!
