Bones

There’s a wide spectrum of television fans, but one segment in particular has garnered special attention among TV writers. That’s right — we’re talking about the shippers, also known as the folks who desperately want to see main characters fall into relationships with each other.

As Entertainment Weekly puts it, “[t]he explosion in shipping has been driven by a new crop of female-targeted shows where romance is the whole point of the series, not just coy subtext or the wishful thinking of fans[.]” Now, EW might put Bones in the above category, but we’re pretty sure that the romance between Booth (David Boreanaz) and Brennan (Emily Deschanel) is not the “whole point” of our favorite procedural.

But that’s not to say that the romance isn’t a big deal... especially for shippers! And while we’re on the subject, Bones creator Hart Hanson had some good things and some bad things to say about his lively contingent of shipper fans. To wit, “it’s a double-edged sword[.] … I have been subjected to huge amounts of abuse from shippers since season 2. They just hollered at me. It was like I was messing with their own romances or something.”

We can imagine how that would be annoying, but look at the turnaround! By finally sealing the deal between Booth and Brennan, Hanson traded five years’ worth of grief for an outpouring of shipper goodwill. (Hanson calls it “overwhelming … passion — some of it not wanted.”) That’s got to count for something, right?
