Often we can expect a given episode of Bones to focus on one particular dramatic mood — some episodes are primarily funny, some are primarily emotional, etc. This one, however, made our lives pretty difficult, as it was equal parts funny and dramatic, with a healthy amount of gore thrown in for good measure. That said, here are the three moments (out of many contenders!) that we felt were qualified to make this week’s list.
1. Clark Edison (Eugene Byrd) is such a boob.
This is actually three separate scenes, in which Brennan (Emily Deschanel) complains about her sore breasts and Clark stammers his way through figuring out how to respond.
Now, let’s just get out of the way that Clark’s stuttering is a comedic wonder to behold. Yes, it’s funny. But we picked these exchanges primarily because they highlight some peculiar irregularities in Brennan’s character — indeed, irregularities that have served as a sticking point for fans over the years. First she nags Clark to be more perceptive about her boobs, but then she’s insulted that he brings them up, and finally she simply takes his mammary observations in stride. We suppose this sort of inconsistency can be chalked up to pregnancy hormones for now, but it’s not exactly out of character for even non-pregnant Brennan.
2. Hodgins (TJ Thyne) and Clark tear it up in the lab.
With all the baby-having and Parenthood-style plot developments of late, it’s not been often that Hodgins can really get back to his King-of-the-Lab roots. This scene, in which the two squints disport with hundred-year-old deadly weapons, delighted us because it really called to mind the good old days of Bones, when Hodgins and Zack (Eric Millegan) would sneak around the boss (be it Cam [Tamara Taylor] or Goodman [Jonathan Adams]) to let loose the craziest experiments you could imagine.
People have been speculating that Finn Abernathy (Luke Kleintank) might be the next Zack, but Clark made a pretty good case for the position in this one!
Now, we couldn’t possibly pick this week’s final scene (too predictable!), but the scene where Booth lets Pops read the letter that Booth’s father wrote makes for a pretty good analogue. And there’s the added bonus of Pops’s grouchy “shut up and listen!” — a nice indicator of the lovable curmudgeon we’ve so missed these past years.
And honestly, when we think about it, this scene (and the one with Pops and Booth in the kitchen) is actually better in some ways than the finale, because it lines up three generations of Booths — virtues, warts, and everything besides.
Now, chances are you think we should have picked some other moments to showcase, and we won’t blame you. After all, there really were a lot to choose from for supremacy this week!
