The Season 8 finale of Bones was thrilling — until Pelant ruined everything. Brennan (Emily Deschanel) finally proposed to Booth (David Boreanaz), but the hacker made sure their happiness was short-lived.
By forcing Booth to end things with Brennan — Pelant threatened to kill more people if the FBI agent didn’t break things off without telling her why — executive producer Stephen Nathan says the doctor may revert to her old ways.
Nathan tells TV Guide that while Brennan has made strides and seen the value of emotion, “It's going to be a big setback for Brennan and a big setback for the relationship when we open Season 9. She opened herself up and was somehow emotionally betrayed. And there's been no satisfactory reason given.”
Yet he assures viewers that this isn’t the end for B&B. “We are now entering Season 9 with Booth having to resolve a situation that has put distance and potential danger between Brennan and him. Booth knows what it will take to right his relationship with Brennan and to right the injustices that have been rained down on him, the squints, and all of these innocent people who have died. And Booth usually gets his man,” teases Nathan.
As for Pelant, the EP says we’ll see the fallout from the finale reverberate throughout the Season 9 premiere. Poor Sweets (John Francis Daley) will definitely be trying to cope with what happened — even if we do jump ahead several months.
One last ray of sunshine? Though he promises their wedding would never happen the way “anyone expects,” Nathan says fans shouldn’t give up hope that we might see it in the future.
