We know our girl Emily Deschanel is a vegan, but she's also been honored by the Humane Society for her efforts in bringing awareness to the issue of animal cruelty. Just as we'd suspect, Emily was totally humble in her acceptance speech: She said she didn't think her contribution was as large as that of other people working to protect animals.
Ironically, Emily's first acting role was in 1994's It Could Happen to You, in which she played a paint-throwing animal activist. She mentioned this role in her acceptance speech, saying she "had the privilege of throwing red paint on Rosie Perez while she was wearing a fur coat." However, Emily admits that she isn't quite as bold as the character she played in that film.
In fact, Emily avoids confrontation like the plague. While she hates getting into it with people, she is really good at "annoying them." Whom does she "annoy"? Bones creator Hart Hanson, for one. But he's obviously not too irritated with her, because he's listened to Emily and pushed for several story points about animal cruelty. There has been an entire episode devoted to the topic (Season 5, Episode 6, "The Tough Man in the Tender Chicken"), and the writers have penned in a soundbite or two in additional episodes. All of it adds up, and the Humane Society took notice, giving Emily an Advocate Award.
