Emily Deschanel (Brennan) recently confided to Ladies’ Home Journal about facing criticism about her vegan pregnancy. “People will say to me, ‘You must eat meat and dairy,’” said the Bones actress.
There’s been a lot of news floating around about Emily’s diet since then, with Ashley Koff, her dietitian, taking a starring role. Under Koff’s guidance, Emily’s nixed pita and hummus — a popular favorite among meat-shunners — in favor of extra vegetables, nut butters, and the occasional smoothie.
But as Emily could tell you (and did!), there’s a lot of controversy surrounding vegan diets for new or expecting mothers. There are reports that a 6-week-old baby in Alabama died in 2007 after being fed only soy milk and organic apple juice, and an 11-month-old starved to death the year after because her vegan mother’s milk lacked sufficient levels of vitamins A and B12. Are these cases a sign that veganism isn’t the right path for the expecting?
